It is still considered “Winter” across most of the nation, even though Florida is reaping the benefits of our sunshine most days. As a born and raised Floridian, I grew up knowing very well that Plant City, Florida is one of the biggest farm fresh producers for strawberries. Yearly, we have the Strawberry Festival. What I am just starting to learn as an adult, is that Florida produces WAY MORE farm fresh produce than I ever realized and now I know how to proactively get my hands on this fresh goodness!
Fresh From Florida gives you an easy access location map to find local Farmer’s Markets in your area. Some may be around daily and some may pop up a few times a month. Produce so fresh, you can even meet some of the family members who own and grow the crops for the beautiful nutrition you are able to provide to your family. It’s amazing to see what I can buy in season right from my local farmers!
Not only do I know that the food did not have to travel far, but I am able to keep money in our local economy. A few of the Farmer’s even offer tours of their farms or have designated months you can go and get their produce for a STEAL. Within a forty minute drive, I can go a U-Pick strawberry patch, a U-Pick blueberry patch, and even tons of produce U-Pick locations! This leads in for some great educational and family activities for the kids as well!
Knowing what is in season locally not only provides that coveted freshness but it lets my pocketbook go further with the groceries. When you buy local, you are cutting out extra expenses that are put on prices through distance transports, packaging, stocking, and getting something that will last longer due to it not being in transport for multiple days!
My son is addicted to strawberries, when they are in season locally, you can tell! Grabbing for the low price of .98-$1.00 a pound! When they come imported, we are paying easily $1.37-$3.98 for the same amount! For a kid who can eat a third of a pound in one sitting, that adds up! As for myself, I can’t get enough fresh cabbage for my ham bone soups, yellow squash for my side dishes, and sweet juicy tomatoes for my salads and sandwich wraps!
Sadly, not all stores are equal, many do not clearly post WHERE their produce is from. I was so happy to find that our new Sprouts Farmer’s Market store does! Clearly I can see the word LOCAL on all products brought in from our Florida Farmers. Even better, today with my own eyes I saw a produce truck from about an hour and a half away, pulling in to make a FRESH delivery!
