Growing up in Florida, most of us were raised on spending time outdoors. I wish I saw more children outdoors now. Not just playing with the neighborhood kids, but spending time with their families. I grew up spending each Summer at a timeshare my Grandmother owned in Clermont, Fl. I learned to fresh water fish and entered many fishing competitions. I learned on adult sized fishing poles which became more frustrating than not as I was not tall enough to handle a full size fishing pole most of the time. When I found out about Kids Casters and the Lil’ Anglers company, I knew I had to reach out! My niece loves fishing. She is all girl yet all tomboy at the same time. I also do not adhere to package recommendations for children and wanted to test my son’s reaction to the fishing pole with his Daddy since the hook for the sponge fish was plastic, causing no fears of being injured with proper supervision.
What we ended up with, was a great day with my brother and the kids, and once the sun stopped beating down directly on us, I brought my husband and son to the lake to test out their reaction as well! We started by baiting up the fishing poles with their plastic hooks and “bait” that once in water would turn in to sponge fish! The kids loved that they could practice over and over casting their lines out and reeling back in. This makes it not so depressing for the kid who never catches a real fish! Within twenty minutes of putting some Canadian worms on the line with real hooks, my niece had caught herself a fish! We all enjoyed how easy the casting button on the reel worked, it gave great practice for the kids. They also reeled in very smoothly. Each fishing pole came with a small tackle box and some sponge fish to use. You can purchase additional sponge fish packs as well. At $21.99 for the set, it is a steal! The company is also getting ready to release character themed poles in the near future such as Dora and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Each of the kids got their own fishing pole and because there is already line in the reel, they are super easy to string up. I was not so keen on the idea of the worms for real fishing as I was raised to use bacon, hot dogs, and cheese for the fresh water fish. Alas, my brother is all about catch and release in this specific lake by our house, which is famous for the storks who nest in the trees in the middle of the lake, photographers are coming out daily to capture them. I on the other hand, prefer to catch fish and eat them! So the fish my niece caught, was released back to the wild! I think what I enjoyed the most even though I was drenched in sweat, was that no matter how hot it was to me, the kids were having a blast! That was the point of getting them out of the house. Away from the toy box, away from the television, and away from the isolation of looking out the windows outside hoping the rain stayed away, which is all too common during hurricane season.
Erika was very proud of catching her fish and wanted to make sure it was OK, before releasing it.
My son was actually really interested in the blue color of the fishing pole, touching the casting button on the reel, and trying to catch that sponge fish once reeled in! My husband is not a huge outdoors guy so seeing him spend a little quality time with our boy put a smile on my face. I do figure that in the future as he gets older and wants to learn to fish it will be his Uncles and myself teaching him! My husband won’t even eat fish!
In the end, I really think that kids should get more time outside, we were rained out for a full week before we could get out to fish and enjoy the day we did. I could easily see myself purchasing fishing poles for the kids as a last day of school gift. Perfect to guide them in to the Summer to nudge them in the direction of playing outside instead of being glued to some game console or television! Thank you to Kid Casters for helping us make Summer memories!
