There is not much more I loathe more than packing up my life and moving. I have had some really class act landlords and leasing companies in the past few years. I tend to think I am a relatively great tenant. I want a home not just a house. I want to create a place my child can grow up in and we can have more little babies running around. I want a spot for my dogs to play. I want neighbors that don’t make me bang my head on the wall.
I have a dream and a desire to save for our own home. I will do this with dreaming up my perfect Sunny Day. A dream that no one can take away from me and I can strive to reach with proper eduction on the steps for buying a home.
Our current rental is a place that I adore the neighbors. I feel safe. I have space. I have memories. You see, I am renting my Grandmother’s home. The house we moved in to when I was six years old. The house where I made best friends that are still with me to this day. The house that I felt trapped in as a teenager. The house I learned to cook in. It’s a home. It’s a home that sadly, needs some love. We are here as a stepping stone while we save for our own home.
Saving to renovate a preowned home or even to buy a brand new built new from the floor up house, takes money. We all want to save for a rainy day but why not a sunny day? A Sunny Day from SunTrust bank is seeing your dreams come to fruition from what you desire to what you will have.
Knowing we are at this house for at least four to five years while saving left us with a few things needing to be done. Literally the month before moving in the above ground pool rusted and collapsed. My Grandmother’s main rule in Florida: No one should be here without a pool. So this was replaced. My son would grow up learning to swim just like I did.
The other thing that needed a little updating and sprucing up was the kitchen. Appliances were newer but the cabinets themselves…yep…from the 1980’s original models, and brown. Without a lot of funds we chose to paint them. We are also painting the outside of the home soon too. A little money can go a long way to make a house feel like a home.
In the process of being here and renting prior houses I have come to learn a few things about wanting to save for our own home and what we really desire. You quickly find out what matters as things start to annoy you. I figured I could cover the flaws in the old tiles with throw down carpets and paint the walls to freshen it up. I’ve never once lived in a new build so it might be something on my dream list. Let’s not forget to mention I learned quickly we will need to hire lawn service or buy more lawn tools after renting this house! My Grandmother has left it up to us to do any repairs under $200 as well.
My bank and realtor will hear this list loud and clear when the time comes but knowing what I want, lets me dream of that sunny day and look at price points, locations, and have goals.
- Neighbors can not be close enough to see in their window
- No lakes or swamps on or near property, the mosquitos, snakes, frogs, etc should not be neighbors
- I need a pool or space to have one
- Garage is a must, not just for getting in and out of a car in pouring rain but to have a work table
- One story preferred, stairs are a hassle with laundry and pregnancy
- I need lots of closet space and storage
- Wood floors
- Privacy fencing
- Garden tub with jets and stand alone shower
- Full length mirrors and vanity in bathroom
- Wrap around patio
- Super fabulous and big laundry room
- No large Oak trees near the house, well not close enough to roof at least
- 4 bedrooms with an extra open room to create a learning/play space
- Huge kitchen with black appliances and beautiful island in the middle
My list is long but making goals and reaching for them is what inspires me to learn more about how to save for our own home and how to get there. The path is only as hard or as easy as I make it. Is your next Sunny Day a renovation or a purchase of your dream home?
