So you are thinking about expanding your family. Congrats! Vehicle shopping with kids can be a headache or a dream come true. As I have done both, shopping for a vehicle prior to having our son and then shopping twice, yes twice, to expand our vehicle capacity, I have some tips to help you on the journey to making a sound decision when vehicle shopping with kids.
While I may only have one child for now, at one point last year we had three car seats in the vehicle while transporting other children. If you are a bigger family or expanding while the children are still young, finding three car seat cars is probably something you should check out sooner rather than later. We have already upgraded to a seven passenger van for the reason of hoping for expanding.
A perk to taking your children with you shopping is that you can see how the car seats fit in vehicles you are interested in. The downside, the kids may get rowdy if you get to signing time. If you can arrive with two cars and a babysitter or family member to take them once you have checked out the fit of your children to what you are shopping for, it will ease the stress when you return home with that shiny new to you vehicle.
Remember, no matter the space, children love car rides! My son was so happy about our van purchase because it had sliding doors, walking space, and lots of leg room! He still drops stuff, spills stuff, and makes messes.
Here are a few of my vehicle shopping with kids essentials for every new to you vehicle! Keep that resale value up even while living that on the go life.
Convertible car seats for all the kids! If they are under the age of five, this is essential. You will know the best fit as well. I know that three infant seats can pile in a third row, but do your convertibles?
While I couldn’t swing for the leather seats in our latest vehicle purchase, I knew that kick mats that also offered organization was key. I’d like to keep the fabric as stain free as possible.
You don’t know how many snacks your kids really eat in the vehicle until you are picking up all the crumbs, trash, and wrappers. A car garbage can is a must have! Even husbands love to stuff wrappers in the doors of the car.
Entertainment for the toddlers is going to be key. With portable DVD players to Kindle tablets Kindle tablets to play games that do not require the internet (Or download a movie or two from Netflix). It will make long drives and road trips completely bearable. They even make a car headrest mount holder for all Kindles, which is great for letting movies play and not having the children hold something that can go flying if an accident or fast breaking occurred.
Sticky juice, sticky snacks, sticky hands! My go to car survival includes WaterWipes. Sure they are great for the bum but they are a MUST for in the car.
As much as we tell our kids no drinks in the car, it is inevitable. Kick the juice boxes to the curb and get spill proof cups for the kiddos. Most car seats come with cup holders, this will safe you a lot of headache.
No matter how your family is expanding, making the decision to purchase a new or used car (new to you), is a family decision. The kids are going to grow up in this vehicle. They are going to make memories in this vehicle. Even if you do not have the children present when vehicle shopping, you can include them by asking what colors or types of features they like. A vehicle is an investment in your future, your family, and your life.
