Cute pets are certainly my weakness. I have not had a “pocket pet” since I was in the fifth grade. Learning to care for a hamster back then was a great experience as small pets that have cages are certainly a whole other dynamic compared to puppies and kittens.
Last year, my son decided he wanted a guinea pig after meeting a few at a petting zoo. Well, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. First came Chelsea, whom we got from the Humane Society. I spotted her online and made sure we were first in line to meet her. We fell in love instantly.
A week or two later we realized Chelsea seemed a bit lonely, so we went and got her a sister… here comes Moana! They bonded immediately. Apparently guinea pigs are pack animals and love to have siblings. But let me remind you, be sure to get the same gender or you may have an army of pocket pets on your hands later!
I have been a long time fan of the Kaytee brand of products that specialize in products for small animals. Our cage, guinea pig treats, and lots of other supplies all come from the Kaytee brand. When I found out that they were coming out with the Kaytee Extreme Odor Control Bedding, I was ready to make the switch!
Caring for a pocket pet is a lot of fun and guinea pigs are great because they thrive with your attention. Chelsea and Moana both sing for me when they see me or alert me when they need more hay.
As first time guinea pig owners, we have learned quite a bit and tried a few methods of bedding. I will always say that the soft paper bedding versus a pine is the way to go, it is much healthier for them.
While cleaning up the cages is fairly easy, I was always looking for bedding that lasted a bit longer; Chelsea and Moana’s bedding seemed to get smelly always a little too soon. Then, we found Kaytee’s Extreme Odor Control Bedding! Kaytee offers a superior claim with their new Kaytee Extreme Odor Control Bedding. They guarantee you will have 14 day odor control (or your money back!). We have noticed such a difference in our home since we started using it. Try it for yourself and you’ll really see the difference too after 14 days!
You will still need to do some minor clean up (as always) but the bedding will last longer overall, which is great for scheduling clean up and keeping your room smelling fresh.
When it comes to being new to guinea pigs I would have to say your essentials as far as expenses are going to be in the following;
- A large cage, the more piggies you have, the bigger a cage
- Great bedding, I recommend the Kaytee Extreme Odor Control Bedding
- Vitamin C drops as guinea pigs do not produce this and need it
- Fun hideaway places in their cage
- A separate play yard you take them to for treat time and exercise
- A water bottle
- A sturdy bowl they cannot flip
- Specialty food for guinea pigs, they can NOT eat rabbit food as it does not have the nutrients they need
- Hay…endless supplies of hay! They love it and it is great for their diet and teeth.
- Fresh produce, often! They love veggies and fruit. My two girls love apples and lettuce a lot!
- Nail clippers. They need special little clippers so their nails can be trimmed up
- Love. Lots and lots of love. Guinea pigs love to be pet, held, and rocked to sleep. Yes, you may get peed on a few good times but their love is adorable.
I highly recommend a quick daily cleaning of any cage but the fact that you can go two weeks without having to pull apart your full cage and keep your home odor free, is another selling point for little pocket pets!
My son is almost six and he has gotten more joy and excitement out of his two guinea pigs than most toys! He loves to talk to them, feed them fresh produce, hold them, pet them, and tell them stories. While I wouldn’t recommend sleeping with them like a dog or a cat, guinea pigs are a treat all on their own with their personalities.
I believe the affordability of guinea pigs is a great way to start kids off in pet ownership and responsibility, too.
I challenge you, if you already own a guinea pig, to take the 14 day challenge with Kaytee Extreme Odor Control Bedding and see the magic. If you are thinking about getting a guinea pig, get two! No one wants to be lonely. Then, try that 14 day challenge! I have made the switch and won’t go back to my old ways of guinea pig bedding!
