Anyone who knows me, knows I let my son do whatever he wants in the pretend world. He is a toddler! He likes to put his Nana’s hats on, he loves to wear sunglasses, tiaras, beaded necklaces, and even put my hair ties around his wrist like I do. Just as I believe there should be no gender role on who plays with dolls, I believe little boys should be able to play dress up too.
The best way to get something other than generic super hero plastic masks and a polyester cape, is to check out costumes at Anytime Costumes, year round, for “Halloween costumes”. Why should they just be for Halloween? Even better, keeping an eye year round can land you some great sales. Davin is currently beyond obsessed with Bubble Guppies and the main characters Gil and Molly. You can like ATC on Facebook to find out when they have specials going on.
The moment we pulled the Gil, Bubble Guppies costume out, I was impressed. The mask was not a paper mask as one might think. It is a soft foam that fits nicely against your face. It has a velcro strap on the back side. The costume is made very well with a nude torso that also has velcro on the back, and openings for your shoe tips to fit in the fins. My son is 18 months old and we got him the size 2T so he has a good length of time to play in it.
He loves to wear it while he chases the dogs, plays with his Bubble Guppies toys, watches Bubble Guppies, and of course likes to pretend, he himself, is a Bubble Guppy! He prefers to be his own character: Bubble Guppy Davin, and not wear the mask often. He prefers if me or Daddy wears it!
Just like a little girl wants to dress up to be a Princess, little boys can dress up as their favorite characters too. Why limit their imagination and play because it’s not text book to have boys dress up? Let’s embrace creativity and imagination by expanding the play area from just blocks and cars. Let us allow our little boys to have a dress up party just like little girls grow up with. No dresses required.
