So you have decided you are going to breastfeed. Congratulations Momma! Breastfeeding is one of the most amazing journeys you can experience with your child. Many will give up, and many will learn that it is not for them but that they can pump exclusively with the right equipment and knowledge. No matter how you feed your baby, we support you. However, if you are here, we hope to be able to make this journey a little easier for you.
I had to learn along the way, and even found myself racing to Target a week later for a nipple shield! (We will get to what that is soon). I thought I was prepared with just a pump, fenugreek, and some bags. I was wrong. I can proudly say now, that I have been breastfeeding my son for nearly 17 months.
Did I almost give up? Tons of times. Did I scream or cry in pain some days? I would be lying if I said I didn’t. Do people judge me now for still breastfeeding him? Duh! (We live in a close minded society). Do I get told to cover up or go to another room? Yep. Guess what? In my state (and most states) it is illegal for anyone to ask that, unless of course it’s their private home, in which case…educating them so they don’t do something stupid in public might be a friendly way to go about it.
Each journey is going to be different so I am breaking up these items in to categories! Let me know if you have any questions or want to share your breastfeeding stories in the comments!
Items here are a compilation of items needed for pumping or even to make nursing straight from the tap easier and less painful!
A manual pump, you would think takes longer than an electric more expensive system. I was given one at the hospital and it became my best friend when I didn’t want the sound of the electric pump going in the middle of the night and to my surprise I ended up getting more ounces when I used it. You can replace parts when needed on both a manual (membranes) and an electric. List Price $41.99, on sale for $34.69 (An electric Medela On The Go Pump will run you around $200-$250 on sale)
This set is good for both the manual or electric pumps. The replacement membranes tend to be the first thing to require being replaced. Of course it is the smallest piece too! Many times I would sanitize the items and forget to put the little flap like membrane in and of course curse under my breath and why it was not sucking anything out!
These are my favorite bags, easy to fill, get the air out of, measure and know how many ounces, and label. I laid them flat in an empty wipes box in the freezer when I started my stash! You will use a lot of them!
If you are on the go or not able to get to a sink, no soap or water is needed to do a quick clean up of your pump parts. You can also use these to wipe down other surfaces..changing table, high chair, etc.
Are you sore?
There are many nipple creams on the market, and essentially they are all safe. I chose to let you in on this completely natural product that is also GMO free. This is a 2pk so it will last you quite some time! It also comes out cheaper per jar than some other brands!
Lifesaver!! After one week of my child chomping with nothing but gums in his mouth I was sore and raw. I ran out and ended up paying about $2 more than you will by using the link above. Most woman are a medium size, if you do find out you are a different size they do have others. You just put this right over your nipple and it softens the blow to take the pain off direct contact.
If you are not in to washing nursing pads or want a back up stock, disposable is an option! However, they do not hold nearly as much as the ones mentioned above and I have had a very wet bra before. If you make sure to change them out often you should be fine.
Don’t waste a drop! Your breasts will leak, that is what breast pads are for! However, if you want to catch every milliliter and ounce of that precious liquid gold, this product has you covered! Pour straight in to your freezer bags once you change.
A bit more modest?
Over the shoulder boulder holders..for the lactating!
Comfort is only one pillow away!
This is my favorite pillow to this day (after my son could stabilize his head!) It was a bit too soft for me when he was a newborn but once he was not as “fragile” it got a lot of use out of it! You can also buy a variety of slip covers to match nearly any theme!
I got a pink one as a gift, so I changed the slip cover on this! I made my husband go home after delivery, so he could bring this in. The pillows in the hospital were way too slippery and what I love about this is the waist snap. The pillow will not budge and it is very firm. Perfect for newborns.
Got twins? They have a pillow for you too! I am not familiar with this as I do not have twins but I wanted to make sure you were covered as well! (Sorry, you can’t feed 3 at a time so no triplet pillow!)
Supply issues? Let’s lactate!
You will smell like a fresh hot short stack of hot cakes drizzled, OK, doused in syrup. However, it works! I could take as little as 3-4 a day and get that warm breakfast scent off my body but also would produce a lot more milk!
You can make your own lactation cookies or you can confess that you ran out of time before giving birth and now are too lazy to get all the ingredients (which the list is big) and just order some tasty milk making goodies! So many flavors to choose from too! A favorite way to up that milk supply!
Get discreet while on the go pumping as well!
Get fancy with your electric pump! Most electric pumps come with a standard black bag. You can grab this bag in blue or black and be discreet while fashionable at the same time! Made specifically for electric pumps!
You pumped, now what? Bottle it, baby!
A friend of mine is an exclusive pumper and loves this kit and the bottles! Easy to get bags for the system as well and store then use, cutting your time in half when preparing your breast milk bottles!
As you can see this is a list for both the pumping and straight off the tap breastfeeding Mom! There is a world of items out there just waiting to be found and many things that people will say you need: bottle warmers, different bottles, maternity and nursing clothing, etc…but we wanted to focus on what makes your journey more comfortable and less stressful. Don’t forget, a healthy diet, lots of hydration, and rest, will help you more than any of these products can! We wish you only the best and would love to hear your breastfeeding stories!
