Three Reasons Your Children Need to Learn to Swim
International Swim Day is the 3rd Saturday of May, which this year is on May 18, 2019. I am so excited that this year the fun loving characters from Paw Patrol will be helping us to celebrate during International Learn To Swim Day at events around the world!
SwimWays, one of our absolute favorite brands has been an industry leader in helping to promote safe swimming and learn to swim advocating for water safety. National Learn to Swim Day was founded in 2012 and has been dedicated to using this time before the Summer break to educate parents and children both, on water safety as well as the benefits of learning how to swim. Now, SwimWays Corporation has gone even further and has extended the event to include international locations, therefore it is not just National but International Learn To Swim Day! Big strides for bigger safety!
Even if you are not attending an event SwimWays and myself encourage parents and caregivers of children to celebrate this event on their own. Many pools will open across the Country in May in the U.S. and it is a great opportunity to raise awareness on the facts….drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages one to 14.
In Florida, many kids grow up learning to go tubing or on boats before they can even swim. I am excited to announce that the new Paw Patrol Swim Trainer is a Swim Step 2 series in the SwimWays Swim Step Program. What does this mean? It will ensure your children’s safety in the water if they should fall in as well! It is even US Coast Guard approved!
You want a scary fact? Here in Hillsborough County, where I raise my son, the deadly toll has climbed. My County leads the state of Florida in number of child drownings. That is DEVASTATING!!!
Here are my top Three Reasons Your Children Need to Learn to Swim!
- It is not just about safety in the pool or ocean. Swim safety keeps our children safe around lakes, ponds, rivers, and even in their own bath tub. Did you know that children can drown in just inches of water? It’s a hard pill to swallow but we are the only ones who can insure safety for our children should they come in to contact with water when not with us.
- Alertness and life saving skills. There have been toddlers who have saved infants and infants who have saved themselves. All my learning to swim. Many swim schools start at the age of six months old with learning to blow bubbles and roll over on their back and float. In an emergency, like falling in to an area of water, knowing these skills are essential.
- The alarming number of teenagers and adults who do not know how to swim is terrifying. Would you go on a cruise ship without knowing how to swim? Drive over a bridge of water? Be stuck in a hurricane where water was rising? Learning to swim is not just about pools. It is about a life skill that will help you stay safe in many circumstances you could come about. Why would you be on a boat sunbathing if you did not know how to swim? I have seen reports in the news of teens who did not know how to swim and lost their lives. Swimming is not just a hobby or sport, it is a life skill.
I would love to encourage you to learn more about swim safety with International Learn To Swim Day and locate a swim school near you for your children! Many in my area offer 1-2 free classes to try out. Our personal classes we have been in with Davin for three years now, we still use our favorite SwimWays products like the Paw Patrol Swim Trainer when trying out new pools or traveling where he wants a little more freedom. They make an array of amazing products for all ages. It is NEVER too early to find a love of swimming for a child. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. The cost comes out to around $20 a class in most facilities.
Does your child know how to swim? How early did you start them? How old were you when you learned to swim? Get out and learn to swim! Your kids will love it and you are providing them with the ability to protect themselves from the elements of water! Have fun and most importantly, be safe!
