Let’s be honest here. Am I not always honest? This is a personal list of mine for Top 10 Newborn Gift Ideas and Essentials. Shopping as a first time parent or even for a first time parent as a gift giver, can be stressful. I became a first time parent last year and was astounded by all the “Must have” shopping lists. Yes, you need diapers, wipes, bottles, car seat, etc. I am talking about the small items some people tend to forget about. Or those items that seem weird or not so special, until you have a moment of tears that won’t stop, sleepless nights, and can’t find anything to help soothe that little wee one!
Here is my personal top 10 products for newborns. Stay tuned to the Top 10 page on the navigation bar above, will continue this series with infant items, pregnancy items, and furniture/big items! These are in no particular order but I can swear by them and will be on my top list for shopping baby showers going forward!
I confess, this little gadget I would not buy until the pediatrician assured me it was great. I still have not even opened the expensive $40 one I bought that scans the forehead as this is guaranteed to be more accurate. Putting anything near my son’s rump was terrifying. What sold me was that it lights up so you can use at night if your child is feeling warm, has a flexible tip, safeguard so you can not go too far (biggest concern), and an amazingly fast 3-5 second reading! It even tells you to clean it! Coming in at under $12.00, a very valuable item in the nursery!
9) Nosefrida The Snotsucker Nasal Aspirator
Go ahead and laugh at me now. I shook my head violently and said I would “Never, ever, ever” use this product! Then I realized how hard it is to clean a syringe bulb and my child hated the suction of it and screamed when I came near him. This seems gross on so many levels, but it is not! You use your suction to get the snot out, yes I said gross sounding- but it never comes near you! It has filters you can change out. A revolutionary product coming in at under $15.00 and filters are super cheap if you run out! I promise, go watch the videos on their website, it is a game changer! You mess with poop right? You can deal with snot!
8) Baby K’tan Baby Carrier, Black, Large
This carrier is not as well known as many others. I do have other carriers and they are perfect for my six month old son now. As an infant though, it was hard to get that perfect kangaroo hold so he felt warm, snuggled, and safe. The K’tan is a mix between a wrap/sling/ergonomic carrier. Men and women alike can wear it. You buy the size based off your pre-pregnancy sizing. Instructions are super easy and the baby will love to be nestled right up to your chest and skin. Perfect to breastfeed in as well. Comes in a variety of colors and even an organic version. Retails at about $50 and is made of full fabric with stretchy material. Super comfortable!
7) Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether
Sophie is famous overseas! She was even featured multiple times in “Three Men and a Baby” movie. The cost outright might shock some but you can find it a few bucks cheaper on Amazon, at the link above. She comes in at about $20.00 but is made of natural rubber. This toy is nearly indestructible to even small yippy dogs! Has a squeaker and soft to chew on. My son liked to touch her and listen to the squeaker as a tiny baby and now it is his favorite toy to take on car trips! Perfect for teething!
6) HALO SleepSack 100% Cotton Swaddle, Cream, Small
These are the very first swaddles I ever got to know. The hospital I delivered at was a “Halo Hospital” where they are very vigilant in promoting “Back is Best” for sleeping. I loved this from the moment he started using it. It can wrap very snug around with the Velcro middle. They even have styles as they get bigger to keep their feet still in called sleep sacks. The Velcro becomes a hassle at times in the wash if not sealed up and once they are wiggly their hands will sneak out by their armpits or neck. See next item to help with that! A Halo Swaddle comes in variety of colors and sizes as well as fabrics. Retails about $16-$25
5) Summer Infant SwaddlePod 2-Pack, Hungry Caterpillar, Newborn
Swaddle Pods! I love other brands of sleep sacks (as shown above) but once their hands get fidgety it is hard to wrap them up with the Velcro. They will outgrow this style rather fast but helps to prevent the hands from sneaking out like the wrap style swaddles. Zips up the front and keeps them nice and warm like just in the womb. They do come in bigger sizes and other colors as well. A two pack is about $16.00
4) Wubbanub Infant Plush Toy Pacifier – Monkey
This has been a dream come true! This creation is based off the “Soothie” pacifier, which most hospitals provide during your stay. However, the Wubbanub is a stuffed animal to help keep it in place! The monkey has been my son’s favorite, there are so many choices though! He also has a frog! During Christmas last year they were so hard to find in local stores, online was the only place to have a selection! They retail between $12-$17 depending on style but are worth every penny. It is the only pacifier my son has ever taken and during diaper changes, saved us from blood curdling screams more often than not.
3) CJs BUTTer Spritz o BUTTer Plus
I am addicted to this product. CJ’s BUTTer is a cloth diaper friendly diaper cream or in this case spray! They sell it in jars, tubes, sticks, and now this friendly spray bottle. They come in a variety of scents. I love Monkey Farts! It smells like bananas! I used this and the cream version on my itchy pregnant belly and it helped with stretch marks and the itch. It is the only product we use for my son’s bum or genital area. He had a small rash in his inner leg and with two applications it was gone! With the spray you can avoid having to stick your hands around their privates while changing once cleaned up! The spritz bottle retails for about $10. Other scents and variations available!
2)Cloud b Sound Machine Soother, Sleep Sheep, Eight Sounds
I swore I was not paying nearly $30 for a stuffed animal that made noises. Yet, I own one now! I loved that I could hook him with his strap to the rock n’ play my son slept in as a newborn. I myself, because addicted to the ocean sounds of the whales and sometimes would wake up in the middle of the night to start playing it again. It has two variations of timers to go off on it’s own. It really did soothe my son on those nights he just couldn’t fall asleep with silence. Even now he continues to use it and it is technically one of his “best friends.” They even sell a giraffe version.
1)Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water, Liquid, 4-ounce bottle
I have written about this product before. When our little fuss pot was a total fuss monster, Gripe water was to the rescue! This stuff personally tastes foul to me (Yes, I taste everything!), but it works! My son would slurp it up. It helped with his gas pains, constipation pains, and general fussiness when nothing could seem to cure the cry! Coming in at about $10-$14 a bottle it is worth every penny. We no longer use it as he is bigger and we use other products for teething but for that first time Mom, it’s a blessing!
This list is compiled of mine and my husband’s personal opinions as first time parents. These are all items we bought ourselves and were not gifted nor gifted to review. All opinions and information is of my own personal use with them. As a parent who has a lot of friends having children in the next few years, I know these are items I personally feel great buying as gifts!
