What Can Google Family Link do for You?
Technology is prevalent in our everyday lives. From the phones we carry on us at all times to the tablets our kids are slinging in their backpacks. By the time most kids are the age of seven, they have their own phone. Wow, I had a beeper when I was 15. I got my first phone at 17. Times surely have changed. Technology surrounds us and at many times, sucks us in. We are lost in a work of social media and our children are playing apps or using video sites like YouTUBE to watch other kids open toys. The mere fact is, our children are using social media at a much younger age than we were and we need to have a little bit of control. I have partnered with Google to share why we love #FamilyLink through this sponsored post through Forward Influence.
At this point in time, it does not matter if your child is younger a teenager. The Family Link app from Google will allow you to set your own digital household rules to guide them to use their time management skills wisely while they are learning, playing, and exploring the world wide web.
When it comes to the content controls, you truly are in control. Before setting up your devices make sure to note that Family Link runs on Android devices running version 7.0 (Nougat) and higher. Devices running Android versions 5.0 and 6.0 (Lollipop and Marshmallow) may also be able to run Family Link. Parents can run Family Link on Android devices running versions 4.4 (Kit Kat) and higher, and iPhones running iOS9 and higher.
While we want to make sure our children are not strapped to the screens, having the ability to hide apps you want them to play less of, block specific sites, and say when enough is enough, Family Link is for your family. Have you ever just wanted to lock up the device when your child has decided to not listen to the other house rules? You can do that with Family Link! While we want to encourage more play time and less screen time, we have to face the facts, screen time is a daily occurrence in our children’s lives now days.
I love that there is no minimum age to set up the account. It takes all of about 15 minutes to set up once you download the app. My son is five, Google did want to verify the account and asked me to input a credit card to set up one for Davin, it will not make a charge though. I now can set limits on how much my son can play online and in his games as well as tracking his usage. You an also award bonus time on the app for good behavior! The smart notifications will also alert me to any downloads he may make from the Google Play Store.
One of the really cool features is that the app will even show you teacher recommended apps. Our little ones have such a wide curiosity and we want them to use screen time not just for game playing but for educational purposes. They can play hand in hand. You can easily set limits for what they are able to do time wise and even set a bedtime. I know my son often crawls in to bed begging for his tablet. Sometimes he pushes the limit and stays up too late, setting the bedtime feature allows me to control when the device will stop letting him access the fun and force him to head off to dreamland.
While my son does not carry his tablet out with him and is not a traveling man on his own, many teenagers are strapped to their cell phones. As a parent you have the ability to track your child’s location as long as the device is on them. This is perfect for middle school and high school kids who often are out in the evenings with their friends. You can also make sure they truly are in school!
